The Controversial Film “Rafiki” To Be Screened in Kisumu

"Rafiki" is Swahili for Friend. Ban lifted for seven days to allow film to be submitted for an Academy Awards consideration.

Well, call it Controversial if you may by Kenyan standards. This is because, the moment this locally produced film came to being, it was immediately banned by the Kenya Film and Classification Board.

But last week, high court sitting in Nairobi temporarily lifted this ban making it eligible for public screening for seven (7) days only.

“Good Kenyan girls become good Kenyan wives,” but Kena and Ziki long for something more. When love blossoms between them, the two girls will be forced to choose between happiness and safety. – that’s the tone of the film.

Last Sunday, the film was screened in Nairobi to an all-sold-out audience. And the tickets have been selling like hot cake in the subsequent screenings.

Film airs in Kisumu up to Sunday.

In Kisumu, this movie started screening yesterday Wednesday at the ANGA IMAX cinema hall Mega City Mall.

Rafiki was banned early in the year by Kenya Film Classification Board that it promotes homosexuality and moral decay in the country.
