Kisumu’s Poetic Hour Battle Goes East African

Your favorite City of Kisumu will be hosting your finest poets from across East Africa courtesy of Talents Industry at a poetry and spoken word – “Poetic Hour” battle to be held at the city’s most hospitable hotel – Acacia Premier Hotel, this Saturday April 7th from 6.00pm.

The event that started as a weekly Poetic Hour Fridays in Kisumu city to help build and nurture artistic talents has now grown wings to bring on board poetic artists from across the region. Last year, there was also held a poetic hour battle that went down at the Mega City Mall.

Over 40 versatile poetry artists applied to participate in the word battle from across the East African region. This was later narrowed down through a rigorous shortlisting process to 13 fire-cracking word-spitting artists who will go head to head in this battle supreme for a cash award of KShs 100,000 to the overall word genius.

Poetic Hour
Socra Tess – Kenya (Tessy Aura (SocraTess) is the personification of what our wise elders told us to expect out of life – a whirlwind. She is a high vibrational, vivacious, voluptuous vixen and poet. She is the rhyming and flowing proof that the joys and pain of life can be alchemized and transformed into pure gold through artistic expression.)
Flowflani – Kenya (Wakaba wa Kairigo a.k.a FLOWFLANI is a rapper/poet/actor/ sketch artist and a vocal percussionist now based in Nairobi. His poetry journey has been inspiredmuch by his rich cultural heritage, being born of a Tanzanian Mother and a Kenyan Father, both artistically minded. His venture in to music began in 2004 as just a rapper, but later evolved into spoken word due to the Mosdef, Talib Kweli,Common, and the Kalamashaka’s elements on his playlist in his quest for depth and richness in his word. FLOWFLANI is now one of the most respected stage performing poets, with his Poems themed “Peace” “Love” and “Harmony in the Discovery of Self”)

Rap Poet – Kenya (fuses Poetry/Spoken Word in Luganda & English with Traditional Instruments like Endongo (Lyre/Harp) string Instrument, Thumb Piano (Mbira) Xylophone and Drums. He has showcased at different Arts platforms both Locally Internationally, including LaBa, Nyege Nyege, Milege, Bayimba and Yella International Cultural Festival, African Day Celebrations organised by Multi choice Uganda, Germany (Haus Der Kulture Der Welt) in Berlin, Wiekiendi Night Live (TZ) at Nafasi Arts Space, Culture and Development East Africa (Dar es salam), Roast & Ryhme (UG). He also hosts a Monthly Poetry Event in Kampala at 32 East Ugandan Arts Trust in Kasanga called Tontoma Poetry Jazz Session)

Afroetry – Uganda (Carolyne Miriam Acen (Afroetry) is a Ugandan Poetry blogger and Spoken word poet. She was shortlisted for the Haiku Africa Competition in 2017.Her Poetry has been published in online magazines like Writers’  café and scriggler. Her work has been performed at Poetry slams like Ladu Poetry Slam which runs monthly in Kampala. Most of her poetry revolves around social issues. She hopes to educate and inspire others through Poetry.)
Andrew
Andrew – Kenya (Poet Andrew also know as the captain in the flight of poetry is a Nairobi based spoken word performing artist. He started out his career three years ago with consistency and passion, he has been able to grace several TV shows including NTV The Trend, NTV crossover, Churchill show. He writes mostly in Swahili but also fuses other languages in his pieces. He is also an event organiser, event host and also a song writer. At the age of 25 with already one spoken word album titled “I am Blessed”, he believes that he still got a lot to offer when it comes to Poetry and Spoken Word.)

Mc Elfra – Kenya (Francis Ogembo,well known as Mc Elfra, is a 24year old cotemporary conscious spoken word performing poet from Nairobi county, in Dagoretti south constituency, Riruta Satelite. His poems talks on matters affecting this society on a day to day basis.)

Hawa Nanjobe – Uganda (Hawa Nanjobe Kimbugwe is one of the most renowned Performance Poets based in Uganda.
Her Poetry began as a road trip but, a journey at Nabisunsa Girls’ School where she was a harnessing member of the poetry club that was dubbed “The Rhymers.” It continued to the Uganda National Cultural Centre (National theatre) where she joined a group of intellectuals known as The Lantern Meet of Poets, here she got an opportunity to perform on stage theatre for the first time. From then onwards she never turned back. She is currently the Poetry Shrine Coordinator at Kitara Nation. Hawa births her poetry to mould it into a growing child that has to go through Phases of life, learning lessons, choosing wisely at times, sometimes wrongly. Bringing it up to be an adult that’s filled with consciousness yet friendly to humanity. Her Poetry is persons! Who are we? What do we believe in? Why do we live and what for? What do we purpose??)

Cardiac – Kenya (He comes from Mombasa and is currently a student at the University of Nairobi. He has been featured on KTN life and style artistic Tuesday, hosted on Baraka FM radio among other poetry platforms. His pieces aim to touch on issues hands can not. He is an inspiration to many as he touches lives without pointing any fingers.)

Ras Godisoh – Kenya (A poet who believes in changing the world through his words. He calls his style the smell of ghetto and the cologne of the city. He values humanity.)

Roger – Kenya (is a spoken word artist, performance poet, rapper and writer from Nairobi, Kenya. Writing mainly in English and Swahili, his work touches on themes from society he believes everyone else has, is or will go through at some point. Themes relating but not limited to; Fears, Hate, The search of purpose and acceptance, Love. His writing is aimed at making his work and performances relatable, fostering a new understanding of what is being addressed. Performing mainly with a finger-style guitarist, he has graced various stages around Nairobi such as; Alliance Francaise, The Alchemist, Goethe Institute, Fadhilee’s Garage, So far Sounds Nairobi etc. All of this culminating in winning Poetry Slam Africa in 2016 and going on to perform at Pawa Street Festival later that year.)

Daphine Arinda – Uganda (a Storyteller and a Poet. She performs with Tutumu Poetry Band which fuses spoken word with percussions, BeatBoxing and string instruments. Daphine is a member of FEMRITE and the Lantern Meet Of Poets. Her work is published on a personal WordPress Blog “EVABELLA”. In her other life she is a lawyer who specializes in Public Interest Lawyering and devotes her time to nurturing indeginous Civil Societies in Uganda.
