Lupita’s Kisumu City Prepares for Black Panther Premier at ANGA IMAX Kisumu This February
Kisumu’s own daughter of the soil is set to hit your big-screens this February in the global premier of the movie Black Panther this February 16, 2018. This will be shown same time as it’s released worldwide at ANGA IMAX, Kisumu.
Lupita plays the warrior character Nakia in the movie, whom she describes as both a “loyalist” and a “rebel.
In the movie, after the death of his father, T’Challa returns home to the African nation of Wakanda to take his rightful place as king. When a powerful enemy suddenly reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king — and as Black Panther — gets tested when he’s drawn into a conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people.
Traditionally the Wakandan Dora Milaje, “Adored Ones” or wives-in-training, speak only Hausa, and only to their king, the Black Panther. Chosen from rival tribes, their presences maintain a balance of power preventing civil war
Nakia is groomed as part of a group of Wakandan women known as the Dora Milaje, and while maintaining the peace, she develops feelings for king overtime.
In an interview with Teen Vogue, Lupita Nyong’o discussed how Black Panther deviates from the roles superhero movies often relegate women to, and how their characters work together instead of tearing each other down.
“My character, Nakia, [is] a departure from the character you see in the comic books,” Nyong’o said.
“She’s this independent woman, super patriotic but also very questioning of her society, and I liked that. With her complicated relationship with T’Challa, I knew it was going to be kind of sexy, and I was like, ‘OK, I definitely want in.’”
“Superhero movies are our modern folklore—and folklore is important,” Lupita continued.
“It informs our sense of oneness. The beauty of cinema is you all go into a room together and agree to suspend your disbelief and share this experience of another world. These big blockbuster superhero films appearing in moments when we’re so polarized are some of the few chances we all get to be on the same page.”
