Retail chain Tuskys has taken over shop space vacated by troubled Nakumatt Holdings in Kisii and Kisumu, growing its branch network to 64 stores. Tuskys has revamped the combined space of 40,000 square feet at a cost of Sh240 million and says that the new outlets will provide a range of benefits to the Nyanza region, including employment and supply opportunities.
Tuskys Lolwe Supermarket at Mega Plaza in Kisumu is also an addition to the United branch located at United Mall.
The outlet will provide a wider variety of products and services. Tuskys’ network consists of 57 branches in Kenya and seven in Uganda.
“At Tusker Mattresses, we remain committed to deepening the formal retail market in East Africa and will continue to invest heavily in customer experience and variety of products on our shelves to mee dynamic market needs,” said Tuskys chief executive officer Dan Githua.
“The opening of Kisii and Kisumu branches provides us with a good opportunity to enhance our footprint and economic contribution in the fast growing Nyanza region.”
Mr Githua also clarified that Tuskys has taken over space from the landlord after Nakumatt relinquished it.
Tuskys has offered to inject Sh650 million into the troubled retail chain and recurring payment guarantees of between Sh1.5 billion and Sh3 billion for the outstanding debt. The offer is subject to approval by the Competition Authority of Kenya.
I Tried Jumia Food in Kisumu – Here’s my Experience
I didn’t know Jumia Food is available in Kisumu. I’ve tried ordering food online from the site before while in Nairobi and they told me they didn’t deliver to my location – in Nairobi. UberEats came to the rescue for that. So when I came back home, and saw they have listed Kisumu on their website, I decided to try it out.
The restaurants signed up are currently only three:
- Java House Kisumu
- KFC Tuskys and
- Sovereign Hotel
I ordered from KFC and food arrived in 40 minutes exactly. I just wish there was no calling from the rider to ask where I am. Mapping is still a big issue in Kenya, and someone needs to find a solution for this. So that orders whether of food or anything, from online stores can be delivered on time.
Also, food packaging needs work.
Food delivery will be a big thing in the coming future. You’ve probably seen texts from Masoko telling you to get groceries from the site delivered to your house. It is nice to see Kisumu not being left behind as this city controls Western Kenya.
I hope more restaurants can sign up so that people can have a wider variety of options with more affordable options. There have been many different ventures in this city of people trying to deliver food, but it seems many of such ventures have failed. Will Jumia make it? Can Uber join in? What about local entrepreneurs?
Do you have an idea for, or are you running a food-related business in Kisumu? What problems are you looking to solve, and how are you approaching them? Do you think our favorite small vibandas can be incorporated into e-commerce sites Jumia Food or UberEats?
Weird Encounter at the Supermarket
I NEED TO RANT about this!!! 😡😡😡😡
I have just left Tuskys and I have NEVER been so disgusted in all my life… The nerve of some people, OMG, I am just fuming!!!! 😳😡
Anyways, this is how it happened:
Picked up a basket and started walking around to get a few things and I noticed this lady was staring at me in the same aisle I was in. No big deal.
I moved to the next aisle and here she comes. Again… STARING! So now I’m like, “What the heck is her problem?!” I finish up with shopping and head to the cashier. Guess who is there ahead of me? Right. The staring lady! She turns around and starts staring at me again.
So I start playing with my phone because at this point it’s getting weird. Super uncomfortable!
Finally she says, “I want to apologize for staring at you, but you look just like my dear son who passed away.”
I thought to myself, “It makes sense now.” I felt kind of bad for thinking she was a weirdo and said, “Sorry for your loss.” She says, “Thank you…but I have a favor to ask. I know it’s weird and I’ll understand if you don’t want to, but can you give me a hug and say ‘Bye Mum!?’
Inside I was like HELL NO, crazy lady, but I know people have different ways of getting over a loss, so I went ahead and did it. She smiles, thanks me, and leaves.
The cashier rings up my stuff and the total comes out to 10,187/= and I’m like – what the heck is this! I just bought a few things and I knew it should have been like 2,000/=.
The cashier then tells me that my total was included with my mum’s. I’m like, “WTH!??” She said, “Your mum said you were paying for her stuff along with your things. I told her that, that woman was NOT my mum!
She said, “Well I saw you hug her and heard you call her mum. I’m like OMG! I can’t believe this!
I flew out of the supermarket looking for this awful woman, ready to drag her back in by her hair!!! I then see her loading her car and I started running towards that car. She saw me and jumped in the car so fast. I got to her just as she was putting her leg in, and I started pulling her leg. She struggled but I kept pulling until her leg snapped off right in my hands!! It was a wooden leg! I’m thinking, OMG! Is this really happening right now?!
So I dropped the wooden leg and grabbed her other leg and started pulling…
Just like I’m pulling yours right now!
I love Tuskys, Pay Less, Get More, Every day.
Mega Plaza Mall to Make Kisumu “Like Dubai”
Mega Plaza mall in Kisumu’s CBD is expanding to include two high-rise towers, offices, apartments, retail space and entertainment.
The developer of the new Mega Plaza is Shiloah Holdings.
The aim is to make Kisumu “Kenya’s Dubai” to change the face of the CBD, Gonna said.
The plaza will have a 16-floor tower and a 17-floor tower, plus banks, insurance providers, health and beauty facilities.
“This will keep up with the growing demand for retail, “Gonna said.
The new building is expected to encompass four distinct blocks and a middle foyer.
The management said this will ensure additional parking on the first, second and third floors, for 400 cars.
The new facility will provide quick access to stores, cafes, restaurants, coffee bars and entertainment.
“Kisumu is strategically placed in the East African region and we believe these investments will open the town to more investors,” Gonna said.
Currently, Kisumu has several malls — The West End Mall, United Mall, Tufform Mall, Mega City Mall, Mini Mall, and Lake Basin Mall.
Since the 2007-08 post-election violence, Kisumu has witnessed tremendous growth in infrastructure.
