Promoting Domestic Tourism with the “Kenya Yetu” Social Media Campaign
Mountains and the ocean. Busy cities and lushy savannas. Beaches and forests. Kenya has it all and we know it. The number of domestic tourists grows every year and according to Kenya Tourism Board, it will jump to 50 percent next year, but we still lack big initiatives promoting destinations other than popular Maasai Mara, Mombasa or Nairobi.
Jovago.com, leading Africa hotel booking website, has just launched a campaign encouraging Kenyans to share photos from across the country and hashtag them with #KenyaYetu.
“Kenya is a beautiful country. Kenyans should be proud of it and be its ambassadors. Don’t wait for other people to start – be the first one” – said Estelle Verdier-Watine, Managing Director of Jovago in East Africa, during What’s Next discussion panel held in Sankara Hotel in Nairobi.
The aim of the campaign is to encourage people to share their travel experiences to inspire others and to change a perception of traveling being expensive. Traveling is a cure to everything that is bad in the world – it opens people’s eyes, makes them more sensitive and tolerant. The company believes higher accessibility of travel is a way to change the world for better, and that a trip does not have to be a distant one to be fun.
“Technology goes forward and so do social media. How many people are using their personal profiles to show Kenya to the world and, most importantly, to fellow Kenyans? We all can see the same destinations being promoted by tour companies all over again – Mombasa, Nairobi and national parks. What about the rest of the country? What about us, normal people, speaking up?”
