CORD Leader Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga today launched and presided over a ceremony in which three scheduled commercial aircraft landed at Kabunde Airstrip.
Raila arrived at the Kabunde Airstrip aboard 30 passenger carrier aircraft operated by Fly540 Limited shortly before midday amidst cheers and ululation from the ecstatic crowds that were waiting most of whom were elated by this development.
Also aboard the aircraft were Homabay Governor Cyprian Awiti, several legislators, government officials and other business persons in what is being seen as a milestone in aviation transport for the greater South Nyanza region .
Shortly afterwards, two other aircraft operated by Fly540 Ltd and Wilken Group also landed at airstrip and offloaded passengers.
Hon. Odinga praised Governor Awiti and his County government for making this dream possible through coordinated refurbishment of the airstrip together with the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority and the Kenya Airports Authroity who will manage the facility. Raila commended Gov. Awiti for his tireless efforts and for successfully conducting long drawn negotiations with airline operators and persuading them of the feasibility of the route.
Raila also described the commercial flights as a potentially big boost to devolution in Kenya and urged business people to utilize the facility and implement additional infrastructure that will attract tourists to visit Homa Bay and neighbouring counties.
“We are excited. This is what we have all been waiting for. The flights to Homa Bay will open up massive business opportunities in the county since the facility will also serve neighbouring counties of Migori, Kisii, Nyamira and Bomet. Our people will no longer rush to catch flights in Kisumu,” said Homa Bay deputy governor Hamilton Orata.
